The Integrator is the Tie-Breaker Re-Visited

I'm talking to you Visionaries out there today. We're going to revisit a topic we've talked about in the past.

As a reminder before we start, in Rocket Fuel we talk about the Five Rules and the Five Tools. I want to emphasize that those are the key to maximizing the relationship you have with your Integrator. Specifically, rule three - the Integrator is the tie-breaker.

When the gets to an issue and part of the team says, "let's go this way," and the other says, "let's go that way," the Integrator must break that tie so the team doesn't stay stuck. They listen to everything there is to hear and ultimately decide. Interestingly, that seems to be the rule that meets the most resistance among Visionaries. It actually triggers some level of fear in them.

Recently, the Visionary a client made the comment, "I'm good with everything, except for that rule.” They pointed to the third rule and said this to the Integrator in front of the rest of the leadership team. You can imagine the impact that had on that Integrator’s ability to fully step into that role and be who their company needs.

On the surface, this may appear as one of those things that's about control. We see that most of the time, it's really about trust. You've heard me talk about this before. Trust is something you've got to be intentional about. When I see someone struggling with this particular rule, I have to be suspicious of their discipline around Same Page Meetings™. Are you doing them? And are you doing them regularly?

The Same Page Meeting™ is so powerful. It's really an opportunity for the Visionary to see decisions the Integrator has dealt with recently and give them feedback. It's an opportunity for the Integrator to bring up decisions they see coming and ask the Visionary for input. In that Same Page Meeting™, you work together and with intention in order to build trust and understand one another. It should really be a coming together of minds. We want you to get clear on what needs to be true for the Visionary to be comfortable letting the Integrator be the tie-breaker. Call it out. Be specific. Put a stake in the ground for when the two of you will commit to actually working together and getting there. Remember, it's a relationship and you've got to work at it.

Three key points to wrap this one up today:

1. It's all about trust. You've heard me say it before.
2. Do that Same Page Meeting™ and do it religiously. It’s so powerful and important.

3. I want you to commit and put a stake in the ground for when you'll let your Integrator break the ties.
