Japan has no major cities on its western coast due to a combination of brutal geography, historical choices, and extreme weather. The region faces some of the heaviest snowfall on Earth from Siberian winters, making large-scale development nearly impossible. Meanwhile, historical momentum—like the Edo shogunate establishing its capital in Tokyo—drew population, infrastructure, and economic power eastward, creating a feedback loop that left the western coast behind. Despite being closer to Asian economic giants like China and Korea, Japan’s western shoreline remains eerily empty.
