Join me on an exciting and information-packed hike to the famous Whitaker Quarry, a massive Coelophysis bonebed that accumulated under mysterious circumstances over 200 million years ago in the Late Triassic Period. It’s been almost 80 years since Edwin H. Colbert from new York’s American museum of Natural History first started excavating slabs of rock containing the contorted and remarkably preserved fossils of thousands of small, predatory theropod dinosaurs and we still have a lot to learn about what killed them how they lived, and why they’re so well preserved.
We’ll learn 10 cool and downright groovy facts about Coelophysis and the bonebed as we explore the paleontology and geology of the Ghost Ranch area in northern New Mexico.
