According to the study 'Punjab's Agricultural Labourers in Transition', the number of farmers in the state of Punjab, which is considered to be the stronghold of farmers, is continuously decreasing. According to the study, in 1987–88, 88 out of a total of 100 families depended entirely on agricultural while the remaining 12 were mixed families. At least one member of the mixed family was involved in non-agricultural activities. However, the proportion of agricultural labor households has fallen from 88 per cent in 1987-88 to just 7 per cent in 2018-19, while for mixed families the ratio has increased from 12 per cent to 37 per cent.
