IT - Inizialmente dominio dei vescovi di Aosta, la proprietà passò successivamente nelle mani della famiglia Challant. Nel corso del tempo gli edifici esistenti furono ampliati ed uniti, fino alla trasformazione radicale avvenuta tra il 1490 circa e il 1510 ad opera di Giorgio di Challant, priore di Sant’Orso, che ne fece una sontuosa dimora per la cugina Margherita de La Chambre ed il figlio Filiberto. Fu allora che il castello assunse l’aspetto attuale, diventando un unico palazzo a ferro di cavallo, affacciato su un ampio cortile e un giardino all’italiana, sul cui alto muro di cinta furono dipinti personaggi importanti ed eroi; il porticato al piano terreno fu ornato da una serie di lunette affrescate con scene di vita quotidiana e rappresentazioni di botteghe, mentre al centro del cortile sorse la celebre fontana in ferro battuto detta del Melograno, simbolo di prosperità. Sempre in quel periodo molti ambienti interni furono decorati con affreschi, sia nelle zone di rappresentanza, quali la Sala di Giustizia o la Cappella, sia nelle stanze più private, tra cui gli oratori di Margherita de La Chambre o di Giorgio di Challant. Dopo i fasti del Cinquecento, la residenza si avviò verso un progressivo declino e nel 1872 fu venduta all’asta pubblica: acquistata dal pittore torinese Vittorio Avondo, divenne oggetto di un’attenta campagna di restauro che le restituì l’antico splendore. Donato allo Stato nel 1907, oggi il castello appartiene alla Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta e si presenta con alcuni elementi dell’originale mobilia ed altri arredi rifatti alla fine dell’Ottocento, che insieme a numerosi oggetti d’uso domestico ripropongono l’ambientazione tardo quattrocentesca voluta da Avondo.

EN - Initially the domain of the bishops of Aosta, the property subsequently passed into the hands of the Challant family. Over time the existing buildings were enlarged and united, until the radical transformation which took place between around 1490 and 1510 by Giorgio di Challant, prior of Sant'Orso, who made it a sumptuous residence for his cousin Margherita de La Chambre and his son Filiberto. It was then that the castle took on its current appearance, becoming a single horseshoe-shaped palace, overlooking a large courtyard and an Italian garden, on whose high surrounding wall important people and heroes were painted; the portico on the ground floor was adorned with a series of frescoed lunettes with scenes of daily life and representations of shops, while in the center of the courtyard stood the famous wrought iron fountain known as the Pomegranate fountain, a symbol of prosperity. Also in that period, many internal rooms were decorated with frescoes, both in the representative areas, such as the Hall of Justice or the Chapel, and in the more private rooms, including the oratories of Margherita de La Chambre or Giorgio di Challant. After the glories of the sixteenth century, the residence began to gradually decline and in 1872 it was sold at public auction: purchased by the Turin painter Vittorio Avondo, it became the subject of a careful restoration campaign that restored its ancient splendor. Donated to the State in 1907, today the castle belongs to the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta and features some elements of the original furniture and other furnishings redone at the end of the nineteenth century, which together with numerous domestic objects recreate the setting late fifteenth century commissioned by Avondo.
