EF2 and EF3 Tornadoes Hit China's Jiangsu Province!
The two cities Suqian and Yancheng of East China's Jiangsu Province on Tuesday were hit by tornadoes, leaving 10 dead, eight injured, and impacting more than 6,000 local residents, according to media reports on Wednesday.

Based on the preliminary statistics, 1,646 households sustained minor damage while 137 households completely collapsed. An area of 41.8 hectares of agricultural crops was damaged and 405 people have been temporarily relocated, the Suqian local emergency management bureau announced.

All injured have been transferred to a nearby hospital, and emergency rescue and post-disaster disposal remain ongoing. The functioning of the area has returned to normal, with the power supply in the disaster-stricken areas being fully restored, and traffic back to normal, according to the authorities.

The tornado was classified at the EF2 level, causing casualties and property damage in some areas, said the local bureau.

An EF2-level tornado is estimated to have a speed of 178 to 217 kilometers per hour and usually causes considerable damage.

In another city Yancheng of Jiangsu Province, an EF3-level tornado also occurred at 8:30 pm on Tuesday, causing five people dead and four injured, according to media reports. From 5 pm to 10 pm on Tuesday, the rainfall in Lupu and Banhu towns reached 202.7 millimeters and 171 millimeters, respectively.

The region is not known for tornadoes at this time of year, however, the recent high temperatures and the influence of the Jianghuai cyclone have led to rare tornado events, experts noted, according to media reports.

Based on videos that have gone viral online, the tornado tore the roofs off buildings in some areas.

The meteorological observatory in Suqian upgraded the warning alert for thunderstorms and strong winds to orange at 5:40 pm on Tuesday. China has a four-tier color-coded warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

It was predicted that thunderstorms would occur at night in some districts in the city, accompanied by winds with a strength of up to level 10 and tornadoes in some regions. The city's emergency and meteorological departments reminded residents to take precautions.
