At –79°C, there is no mistake, no second chance. On a narrow ledge carved into the side of a frozen cliff in Yakutia, an 80-year-old grandmother and her 10-year-old grandson fight to keep a tiny stone house, a few sheep and their own lives from being swallowed by the blizzard.
From the moment the first light leaks through the frost on the stone wall, they are working: feeding the sheep on the edge of the abyss, cutting frozen wood on a wind-blasted slope, melting snow for drinking water, patching torn boots and clothes before the cold finishes the job. As night falls and the storm thickens, a new threat steps out of the white — wolves circling the sheep pen below the cliff. Between the stone house and the cliff edge, under a sky full of blowing snow, one old woman, one child and a ring of fire must hold the line.
This is a day and night in a life lived on the limit: a Yakut family clinging to a stone ledge above the void, herding, cooking, mending and standing watch in a –79°C blizzard, refusing to give up even when the wolves close in.
