The Heiligenberg in Heidelberg boasts a rich history of settlement spanning 7,000 years. Its name translates as "Mountain of Saints," but it was once also referred to as Mons Sancti Michaelis, or "Mountain of Saint Michael."
That means it is thus among the numerous peaks across Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael, including its well-known counterpart in Normandy, France, Mont St. Michel.
It is likely that the Neolithic settlers, and almost definitely the Celts, Romans, the medieval Catholic Church, and more recently, the Nazis, recognized the spiritual importance of this mountain.
