Purging is another process that can happen in about 10-20% of patients starting retinoids.
Purging occurs when the skin is introduced to a new active ingredient that increases skin cell turnover, in this case a retinoid, which can cause oil, debris, and keratin that have been collecting in the pores to now come to the surface, manifesting as acne breakouts.
If you experience purging, it usually occurs within 2-4 weeks of starting the new retinoid. Breakouts with purging are thought to be smaller (like blackheads or whiteheads), but they can really look like any type of breakout (cysts, pustules, nodules). If your new breakouts are persistent for more than 8 weeks, I recommend seeing a dermatologist.
The bottom line is that retinization and purging are somewhat expected processes that can happen in anyone starting a retinoid and should not discourage you from stopping the retinoid. Your dermatologist is also here to guide you to minimize the effects of retinization and purging if you do experience them.
