Food bank volunteers rally to combat food insecurity in the New Year

As the New Year begins, The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri stands as a beacon of hope for families in need across 32 counties, driven by the tireless efforts of dedicated volunteers.

Joe Engeln, a volunteer for nearly a decade, highlights the dual role he plays: breaking down bulk shipments into family-sized portions and preparing senior boxes filled with nutritious, long-lasting canned goods. “For the Senior box, they’ll get canned goods that will last them for a month,” he explains, emphasizing the importance of accessibility for those who may not be able to seek help publicly.

Engeln, who began volunteering shortly after his retirement, dedicates two to three days a week to this vital work. “Since I retired, I now work for a number of nonprofits,” he shares, reflecting on how service not only strengthens the community but also fosters personal connections. “You don’t retire from something; you retire to something,” he states, noting how volunteering has helped him forge new relationships in a relaxed environment where everyone feels welcome.
