I build box mantels very similar to how I build floating shelves, where I use the miter-fold method.
What is the miter-fold method?
A miter cut allows two pieces of wood to come together, creating a seamless 90-degree angle. The best way to describe the design is that it looks like the wood grain wraps around all sides of the shelf, with no rough or raw edges. Some execute this process using tape along the seams, then folding the pieces together; some do not. There are multiple ways to build things! In the end, the fold comes from the joints coming together, not how it’s built.
This mantel was made with 3/4” white oak plywood. I have built this mantel with and without tape. In this video, I used tape to show those of you who are building this for the first time how it can be helpful.
If you want to see how I use this same method to build floating shelves, check out these instagram videos for quick tutorial. Remember, for the mantel it’s the same concept — just adjust your size to meet your mantel specs.
