Watch my videos on (1) Chord inversions (2) chords I-IV-V7 and (3) ALL chords in C major, then you will be able to chose these chords and the Am, Dm chords in an easier way. This example presents chords in a particular way, with highlighted keys. But if you learned with books, change them to the way you have practiced with books.
Most adult books present the first 3 chords to be C, G7 (in inversion #1) F (in inversion #2) and then gradually move your hands to G position, exposing students to chords D7 and C in inversion; then move hands into F positions, exposing students to chords C7 and Bb. All these are usually called by the chords' numbers, written in Roman Numerals (I-V7 or IV) All three are major chords no matter what key you play.
After chords I, IV, V7, the most popular chords are minor chords ii, and vi.
In a C major song this means chords Dm and Am. The example here is Last Christmas, and it uses these minor chords.
