"Common trend among Native American tribes was the fact that people weren't interested in time for the sake of time itself. There were no clocks or calendars. And so time was told by the ebb and flow of tides, by the ripening of the strawberries, by the sun's position in the sky, by watching stars rise and fall, or by knowing when the bears wake from hibernation. Native Americans did track and name the lunar cycles (say from one new moon to the next). . Lunar cycles were named after what was happening at the time. For instance, one tribe named one lunar cycle "laying geese" and another cycle "coming caribou"
I wrote this work while a resident at Wildacres Retreat in the Mountains of North Carolina. I was living without time constraints, following the moon, the rising sun and the movement of the leaves with the passing of the winds. All five movements were written during the first week of May, which by the Native Americans Lunar cycles is called "Flower Moon".
I incorporated into the piece and based it on a lot of fourths and fifths intervals, to connect as much as I could with the sound of the Native Americans who lived on the beautiful mountains of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina."
