Eros and Psyche - How a Mortal Won the God of Love

The story of Eros and Psyche begins with the princess’s beauty, which aroused envy even from the goddess Aphrodite. The goddess ordered her son to make her fall in love with a monster, but Eros, wounded by his own arrow, fell in love with her. Carried by Zephyr, Psyche came to live in an invisible palace, loved by a husband she only saw in darkness. Influenced by envious sisters who made her doubt, she broke trust and lost Eros. To win him back, she underwent the cruel tasks imposed by Aphrodite: separating grains, gathering golden wool, fetching water from the Styx, and descending into Hades. With divine help, she passed all the trials, but when she opened Persephone’s box she fell into a deathlike sleep. Rescued by Eros, she was taken to Olympus, where Zeus granted her immortality. Thus, she was united forever with the god of love, and from their union was born Hedone, goddess of pleasure.
