In this video, we briefly go over the concept of the Material Derivative (aka the Substantial, Total, Substantive, Stokes, Lagrangian derivative...so many names).
In fluids analysis, we fix our window in space and watch stuff fly by via the Eulerian perspective. This means we miss out on fluid accelerating through space because we only look at one point. In our observation window, even if velocity is not changing in time, there still might be acceleration and force through the "Convective Acceleration". Here, we justify the need for the Material Derivative and where its form comes from.
The Material Derivative is a necessary concept to understand before moving on to the Conservation of Momentum.
