ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
“Hawk” in concert in the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone he helped put on the map.
Introduced as the greatest tenor sax player in the world by the host, Coleman Hawkins is greeted by cheers from the Belgian audience. It was June of 1962, and “Hawk,” then 58 years old, had already enjoyed a forty-year career. He was the first prominent musician on tenor sax, he made a landmark recording of Body and Soul in 1939, he easily transitioned from big band (notably in Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra) to the bebop revolution he helped pioneer in 1944, and has been cited as a major influence by Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. His stature is immense—on the level of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington.
So it’s always a special treat to see him in action, even at the end of his career (he passed away in 1969), which is the case in this RTBF radio network recording from Dinant, the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, whose invention Hawkins put forward as an acknowledged jazz horn. His playing had doubtlessly grown in amplitude, as he was reputed for the power he could generate when he had to make himself heard amid an entire armada of brass. Bassist Jimmy Woode (who played with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington) and explosive drum player Kansas Fields (who played with Cab Calloway, Sidney Bechet and Dizzy Gillespie) make up the rhythm section of the quartet completed by French pianist Georges Arvanitas, who played with everyone from the European pop stars of the sixties to the great jazz artists of his time. The ensemble unleashes extraordinary dynamism, which reaches us today with all its power intact.
