Video by @JenniferHayesig | Welcome to the harp seal nursery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This harp seal pup, called a white coat, curiously approached my camera after I set it on the sea ice. The gulf pups are born in late February and nursed for 12-15 days; the mother then leaves the pup to mate with nearby males and migrates back to Arctic waters. Higher than normal temperatures in January led to reduced ice cover. On February 29, we located a large herd of 10,000+ adult seals with newborn and day-old pups. Pups depend on stable ice to mature enough to survive, and sadly the outlook this season looks grim. We will continue to document and share the 2020 class of harp seal pups' life on thinning ice. More to dispatches from the ice to follow. #HarpSeal #LifeOnThinIce #BornToIce
