Join us as we begin our adventure in Thompson Springs, Utah, a nearly abandoned town with ties to cattle ranching and railroad history. We briefly explore what remains of Thompson Springs but our actual destination lies to the north: the incredible Sego Canyon Rock Art Interpretive Site. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this site features three distinct and culturally significant types of rock art—Barrier Canyon style, Fremont, and Ute—etched and painted onto the canyon walls over thousands of years. The Sego Canyon Rock Art Site is one of the most significant Native American rock art sites in the region, featuring vivid images that tell the story of the Indigenous people who once inhabited the area. Explore the stunning petroglyphs and pictographs that have been preserved for centuries, offering insight into the rituals, beliefs, and daily life of these ancient people. Learn about the techniques they used to create these masterpieces, and discover how the art has stood the test of time in one of the most rugged and remote environments in the United States.
Alongside these ancient rock paintings, we explore remnants of the ghost town of Sego and the Sego cemetery. A former coal mining town, the railroad remnants and deteriorating structures tell a story of coal prosperity and human struggle. This once-thriving town now stands as a haunting reminder of the past, with decaying structures scattered throughout the extraordinary landscape.
In this travel vlog, you’ll not only experience the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Sego Canyon, but you’ll also learn about its historical significance, the Native American heritage, and the allure of discovering off-the-beaten-path destinations. Whether you're interested in rock art, ghost towns, or the history of the American West, this video will fuel your wanderlust and spark your curiosity.
