De-powering a Koyo Steering Rack

There is no non-powered steering rack available for this car, but it's being converted to electric powered assists and no longer needs the hydraulics. There are instances where you may wish to do this just to convert a power steering equipped car to a manual rack, such as drag racing. Whatever your reasoning might be, there are steps you should take to protect it internally.

Previously I've made a video of rebuilding a Koyo rack for use with hydraulic power steering and that video is available here. An extremely similar rack to this one. Most Koyo rack and pinion gears work exactly the same with very similar parts so these two videos should apply to the vast majority (if not all) of the import cars that use them... which is most of them. The steering rack relies on power steering fluid for lubrication. Take that away and it creates a slow self-destruction for its internal parts. The short explanation is to grease and seal it so that it can't escape. That's exactly what I do in this video, but you know I'm meticulous enough to also rebuild it in the process with new parts that will stand the test of time. And while we're at it, might as well make it look the part, too!

This video is largely a test of new camera equipment while completing a different and necessary step of my GSX's restoration. This has totally been in my way of completing its assembly. The column modifications will follow later, but the rack had to be finished before I could assemble the rest of the front suspension.
