Renault has brought the Renault 5 Turbo back to life, reimagining it for the modern era as the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. This car is not merely a flashy concept—it is headed for production. Renault has retained the essence of the iconic 1980s hatchback while infusing it with cutting-edge electric technology. Unlike its predecessor, which featured a mid-mounted four-cylinder engine, this updated version boasts dual electric motors located at the rear.
The original model produced about 160 horsepower with its 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, but the Renault 5 Turbo 3E takes things to another level. With a combined output of over 500 horsepower, it generates more than three times the power of its ancestor. This makes it significantly more powerful than the Alpine A290 and gives it a 350-horsepower edge over the standard Renault 5. Although Renault has not disclosed torque figures, the new Turbo 3E accelerates from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in just three and a half seconds—outpacing competitors like the MG4 XPower, which delivers 429 horsepower.
The design of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E embraces its rally-inspired heritage while modernizing its look. It ditches the rear doors of the standard Renault 5, replacing them with sleek side vents. The muscular fenders pay homage to the original R5 Turbo, while massive 20-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires enhance its aggressive stance. The car's lightweight "carbon superstructure" not only adds to its performance credentials but also provides exceptional stiffness. Although the exact weight has not been revealed, previous iterations with similar configurations weighed around 3,300 pounds.
This rear-wheel-drive electric hatchback represents a bold departure from the regular Renault 5, which is a front-wheel-drive vehicle powered by a single motor. The shift to a dual-motor configuration at the rear mirrors the layout of the original Turbo models, creating a nostalgic connection for enthusiasts.
While the market for this kind of niche performance vehicle is undoubtedly small, its existence speaks to Renault's commitment to innovation and honoring its history. With production set to begin in 2026, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E promises to be a thrilling addition to the automotive world, likely carrying an exclusive price tag and limited availability. Whether you are drawn to its performance, design, or heritage, this is a car that enthusiasts will not want to overlook.
