(HD) Railfanning Pine Junction, Gary, Indiana, on 11.12.11 ~Part One~

I spent a fantastic morning railfanning NS, Amtrak, CSX and CN / EJ&E at Pine Junction at Clark Road in Gary, Indiana. This time I'm using a (borrowed) HD camera and a tripod. This video is in two parts- be sure to see Part Two for more!

Train 1:
EJ&E SD38-2 #671 brings a cut of cars out of the NS-CN interchange yard at Pine, heading for Kirk Yard just to the east.

Train 2:
Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific power leads a manifest west on the Chicago Line- NS C40-9W #9391, UP SD70M #3912, and NS C40-8 #8716. Some interesting old cars are in the consist- hoppers from the Milwaukee Road, Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway.

Train 3:
Amtrak Phase I Heritage P42DC #156 and P42DC #41 lead train #30, the westbound 'Capitol Limited', across Clark Road, closely following the previous freight. A beautiful, private Southern observation car is on the rear!

Train 4:
P42DC #88 leads train #371, the westbound 'Pere Marquette' from Grand Rapids, slowly following right behind the 'Capitol'.

Train 5:
EJ&E SD38-2 #659 chugs up the Hill Track with a local job out of Kirk Yard.

Train 6:
An NS stack train waits as westbound train #48, the 'Lake Shore Limited', proceeds toward Chicago, following the bunched-up traffic in front of it. P40 #837 and P42 #171 lead.

Train 7:
P42s #35 and 32 bracket the five cars of yet another westbound Amtrak train, #365, the 'Blue Water' from Port Huron, Durand and Lansing, Michigan.

Train 8:
CN GP40-2LW #9544 brings a very long "Heights Local" (Gary to Chicago Heights via the EJ&E) up the Hill Track out of Kirk Yard. This train actually stalled out on the grade and had to be helped up later by a GP38!

Train 9:
On CSX's ex-B&O, ex-Conrail SD60I #8737 zips west with a stack train.

Train 10:
Meeting the intermodal, CSX AC4400CW #68, and AC6000CW #667 power a manifest freight east.

Train 11:
Back on the NS Chicago Line, a Canadian Pacific autorack train on trackage rights heads east, led by CP ES44AC #8862.
