Krautrock is a broad, catchall genre that encompasses the many permutations of experimental rock music created by German bands in the ’70s. But one of krautrock’s greatest ironies is that the lead singer for one of the genre’s leading bands was born in Japan.

Tatsuya Takahashi, Chris Hohnerlein and Max Rest discussed the what, why and how of a unique instrument in their public lecture as part of RBMA Berlin 2018.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Red Bull Music Academy in Berlin, Tatsuya Takahashi, Christoph Hohnerlein and Maximilian Rest collaborated on a brand new musical device, the Granular Convolver, which was given to each of the participants attending the Academy. As Korg’s former chief engineer, Takahashi has been responsible for some of their most exciting products in recent years, including the Monotron, Minilogue and Volca series.
Hohnerlein is a DSP engineer specializing in the field of auditory perception, while Rest is the co-founder of E-RM Erfindungsbüro, a Berlin-based hardware manufacturer specializing in high-quality MIDI sync devices. In 2017, Rest and Takahashi first collaborated on a synthesizer project for Ryoji Ikeda’s [A For 100 Cars] as part of Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles 2017.
