We spend a peaceful afternoon at Kandawgyi Lake, a natural oasis that has been the heart of Taungoo. Originally a natural lake, it was integrated into the city's design by King Mingyi Nyo in 1510 and remains a favorite hangout for young locals. After taking a rest in the lakeside atmosphere, take a walk to the Sin City Gate. We found a part of 516-year-old ancient city wall nearby Sin Gate. It is a rare surviving piece of the original city wall. While the local museum is currently closed, the gate itself serves as an outdoor monument to the city's 516-year-heritage.
Helpful Notes
The Kandawgyi Lake: A natural lake renovated in 1510 by King Mingyi Nyo. There are four islands named Jasmine, Banana, Coconut, and Orange in the lake. So the lake is also known as Four Islands Lake. The original name of Kandawgyi Lake is Kyar Inn Lake. Because once the lake was filled with water lilies.
The Sin Gate: It is part of the original defensive layout of 20 gates, each once topped with a turret.
516-Year-Old City Wall: When King Mingyi Nyo established his new capital, Ketumati (Taungoo), in 1510, he designed a formidable defense system. The city was protected by a massive brick wall and a dual-moat system: a mud moat located 21 feet from the wall and a water moat situated a further 10.5 feet from the mud moat.
