In late 1937, Shanghai – China’s largest and most modern city – continued to resist the Japanese army, which had expected to seize it in just eight days.
The next target lay 300 kilometers west: Nanjing, the capital.
Along the road between the two cities, Imperial Japanese troops looted, burned, assaulted civilians and executed prisoners in a brutal campaign without restraint.
What happened in Nanjing revealed the true nature of Japan’s total war in China and across the Pacific between 1931 and 1945 – a war of domination that left more than 20 million people dead.
