On June 5, 1899, General Antonio Luna was killed in the plaza of a rectory in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija. Luna arrived with two adjutants and twelve escorts on horseback. After dismounting and dismissing his men, he went alone to the parish where Aguinaldo's headquarters was located. When going up the stairs, he met a junior officer who told him that Aguinaldo had left with his orders. Luna felt that he was underestimated, expressed a very strong attitude towards this matter, and prepared to leave. When he turned to leave the room, Aguinaldo's sergeant in one of the two companies in Cabanatuan jumped out from behind the door where he was hiding and attacked Luna from behind, causing serious injuries with Bolo.
