The Dutch tulip bulb harvest is in full swing during early summer. This is the case at specialist bulb growing company Van der Avoird Bloembollen from Lemmer. In this case the bulbs are grown on light land so they are not grown in nets. The harvester is a heavily modified Ploeger AR-4Wd, which is usually used for lifting potatoes. No less than 3 Valtra T174 tractors with massive 3-axle Jan Veenhuis trailers are used for transport.
We follow the precious bulbs into the washing and grading facility on the farm. First the soil is sieved out. Then the bulbs are washed carefully. They are graded and put into boxes. After 48 hours of drying they are peeled and graded again. This involves a lot of hand labour. Finally the end product is packed in small trays or wooden 1 tonne boxes. These bulbs will be reared by a specialist grower that will harvest the flowers. A lot of bulbs are also exported to all corners of the world.
