Wes Dooley, President of AEA Ribbon Mics, gives a brief history of why his company produces some of the best ribbon mics in the world following the tradition of RCA Big Ribbons. He even talks about two special mics in his personal collection: one of them being Les Paul's personal RCA 44 ribbon mic that was his favorite. He had five of these mics, but this one was his favorite and it had his personal touch to it. The windscreen was replaced with a lady's stocking.
The 2nd is a microphone from the famous studio and engineer Wally Heider up in San Francisco, CA. This microphone is also a RCA mic, a RCA 44BX. The stories this mic could tell!
Later in the video Scott Sill plays a Custom Martin OM-28 Marquis, Madagascar to perform the Ribbon mic shootout. He starts out with a Shure SM-57 as a point of reference before hearing all the other mics. The ribbon mics that were tested were:
AEA R92 Big Ribbon
AEA R84 Big Ribbon
AEA K84 Unidirectional
AEA N22 Nuva Series
Les Paul's RCA 44B
Wally Heider's RCA 44BX
