Week 1 Now of Buffalo Lawn Rescue, also known as St Augustine in the States.
It is now the nearing the end of autumn and winter is a few weeks away. The lawn is still growing but is slowing up and will be dormant soon. Faced with this the race is on to get as much condition as possible before the dormancy. Winter will beat us before getting a repair.
The areas that were really low and damaged had the dead material removed and the soil loosened up with a rotary hoe. I top dressed this heavily (about 50mm in parts) with some 8/2/1 ( a sandy loam mixed with organics) from Heidrichs in Port Pirie SA. This top dress is nice, it is just alive and rich with nutrients. A great base for lawn.
A couple of other smaller low areas were top dressed to level but I kept the lawn plant there and had some green leaf showing. That will come back nicely.
The rest of the lawn where we have plant left was very lightly top dressed just to add some nutrients and give the base a slight freshen up. This lawn is super uneven however because of the impending dormancy I don't wish to smother the lawn with topsoil.
The plan from here is to fertilise and we've started with Lawnporn Four Seasons. A dual (nitrogen and potassium) slow release with iron for some deeper greening and sulphur to help the plant become more effective grabbing nutrients and become more resistant to the extreme weather we can get in Port Augusta SA.
Our Four Seasons fertiliser can be found at good retail outlets across Australia or online with delivery direct to your door.

The problem we will have with the bare dirt areas and the oncoming winter is winter weed germination. Winter broadleaf weeds grow in the winter when the lawn slows and stops growing. It is a problem however we'll be armed with some selective herbicide that won't affect the buffalo lawn. Although I haven't tried it before, and to keep costs down for the owner, I am going to give the Amgrow Buffalo Lawn Weeder a crack and see how it goes. Again, this product is available at good retailers and online via our friends at the Toolroom.

In regards to grow in of the top soiled areas there will not be much now so for watering we are going to keep to a once a week deep watering and a quick 5 minute water in the morning if the lawn gets a frost.
I am following my repair program which is on page 10 of the Foliar Application Guide. All our guides are available for free download. Visit

Although this guide is designed for growing season repair, we can adapt it to where we are sitting and just make the best lawn possible to survive the winter ills and hit spring running with a repair.
