So Saturday 12th October 2024 was my last planned long distance steam train adventure of 2024, I decided to race Vintage Trains The Cathedrals Express to Lincoln.
My day started off heading into Birmingham from home to New Street Station to try and see a diesel tour due in the platform next to the steam tour heading from Crewe to Portsmouth at 07.55 but this ran late so 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe came into platform 1 on time but while waiting for its departure the other tour somehow made up lots of time and pulled in at platform 3 instead of 2 it was originally due to use so I managed to see that departure 1st before 5043 pulled away on time and in clouds of steam from underneath the station.
It was then a race against it towards Lincoln where I made it to Swinderby with about 40 minutes before 5043 came although there were already a few people already there as I got off the train, the opposite platform to me had arguments with a lady obscuring someone's view to the point I had to say something otherwise it would of carried on ruining my video fully, both were older people too but it always seem to be those older people that do argue or be idiots.
After the drama's I decided to walk into the village for a couple of pints in the local pub to kill a bit of time before returning to Swinderby Station for 3pm and being the 1st there this time so I set up ready and waited, whilst i was waiting i was allowed up into the signal box to watch the lad work the levers to the semaphore signals, its future is bleak though as its been due for closure and most likely will by the end of 2024 as the signs state, a few others did arrive but not as many as the morning and when 5043 came she didn't disappoint with her full steam ahead with a beautiful sight and sound as she passed by.
It was then an attempt to get back to Birmingham New Street to see the return back home and involved 2 changes via Nottingham then Derby, on getting to Derby my connecting train to Birmingham was delayed so the signs didn't look good at all so I got on it once it came and kept my eye on where she was and luckily for me my train came out ahead of her as she was approaching Coleshill Parkway so it was then a rush from platform 11B all the way to platform 1 to see her pull in back home later than expected so the race was won this time around.
Thank you to everyone who makes these tours possible and the lovely people I meet along the way.
Thank you for watching the video, please like, share and subscribe.
My next videos will be local one's now featuring the last Vintage Trains Shakespeare Express's and then the Polar Express's from the end of November
