Step 1: Upload Bootloader and Firmware
1. Open the VESC tool and select Firmware from the left menu.
2. Navigate to the Bootloader tab (the tool should recognize the hardware).
3. Click the upload button (downward arrow icon) in the bottom-right corner.
4. Confirm by clicking Yes in the popup.
5. Wait for the Upload done message—this means it's successful.
Firmware Upload:
1. Go to the Included Files tab in the Firmware menu.
2. Enable Show non-default firmware (checkbox at the bottom-left).
3. Select VESC_default_no_hw_limits.bin.
4. Click the upload button (downward arrow icon) in the bottom-right corner.
5. Confirm by clicking Yes in the popup.
6. Wait for the Upload done message, then click OK. The VESC will reboot.
Step 2: Setup VESC
Motor Settings - General:
1. General Tab:
o Motor Type: FOC
o Motor Direction: True
2. Current Tab:
o Motor Current Max: 180A
o Motor Current Max Brake: -50A (Do not set to 0).
o Absolute Maximum Current: 216A (Set to ±20% more than Motor Current Max).
o Slow ABS Current Limit: False
o Battery Current Max: 150A (Set to the maximum your battery can provide).
o Battery Current Max Regen: -50A (Do not set to 0).
3. Voltage Tab:
o Battery Voltage Cutoff Start: Voltage for "turtle mode".
o Battery Voltage Cutoff End: Voltage for complete shutdown.
4. RPM Tab:
o Max ERPM: 100000,00
o Max ERPM Reverse: -100000,00
5. Temperature Tab:
o Motor Temperature Sensor Type: Disabled (No sensor available).
6. BMS Tab:
o BMS Type: none.
7. Advanced Tab:
o Minimum Input Voltage: 12V
o Maximum Input Voltage: 86V (For 20S setups).
Save Settings: Click the downward arrow ("↓M") to write to the VESC.
Step 3: Setup FOC
Filters Tab:
1. Enable Phase Filters: True (Specific to this VESC).
Save Settings: Click the downward arrow ("↓M").
General Tab:
1. Set Sensor Mode: HFI.
ℹ️
HFI is a technology that enables a motor to spin at low RPM without requiring positional information from sensors.
ASS (now rebranded as VSS because ASS sounds inappropriate) is a VESC-based technology that can start a motor spinning from a standstill using HFI and a temperature sensor.
2. Run the Detect and Calculate Parameters wizard:
o Set I to 30A.
o Click RL and confirm in the popup (motor will make noise).
o Click Lambda and confirm in the popup. (motor will spin up)
o Ensure all indicators turn green.
o Click Apply to populate the detected values.
HFI Tab:
1. HFI Samples: 16
2. HFI Start Voltage: 40,0 V
3. HFI Run Voltage: 25,0 V
4. HFI Max Voltage: 25,0 V
5. Sensorless ERPM HFI: 1000,00
6. HFI Start Sample: 65
Save Settings: Click the downward arrow ("↓M") to write to the VESC.
Step 4: App Settings (Remote Control)
1. Click Setup Input from the wizard.
2. Follow these steps:
o Turn on the remote and set all controls to MAX.
o Select PPM input such as conventional RC receivers, then click Next.
o Test throttle control: Verify the data bar moves when you use the trigger.
3. Calibrate the throttle:
o Move the throttle to maximum and minimum positions.
o Set the Pulselength Center value + 10ms
o Set the Pulselength End value: - 30ms
4. Select the control type:
o Current No Reverse (With brake is optional).
5. Click Finish to save settings automatically.
