This is Momoko Kikuchi's "10 Day Australia Diary" (JSF 1004), a video tape diary released on JVC Victor's S-VHS video tape system. This video appears to have also been known as "Momoko Kikuchi's Australian Location Diary" & "Momoko's Diary From Down Under."
Momoko Kikuchi is a multitalented artist who began her career when, in 1982 at the age of 14, a talent agent saw her photo in her aunt's restaurant and requested to know more about her. Within 2 years she was headlining films and was releasing singles on the popular VAP music label. Over the course of her still-continuing 40 year career, Momoko has been an actress, singer, idol, news presenter, radio host, author, and much more.
Noted for her kind & thoughtful personality she is loved by her fans and the people that she works with. In addition, with the spread of City Pop worldwide, she has regained some popularity through her music, both her early solo career and her later works as a part of the duo RA MU.
"Australia Diary" lives up to it's name! This video documents Momoko's stay in Australia for a period of 10 days. During this time, she works with her production crew on a number of short productions and promotional material, including the infamous "Those eyes are a little naughty!" JVC Victor commercial. While obviously feeding her fans with plenty of visuals of the lovely Momoko, this production is far more than simply being a promotional vehicle for her. It's an honest and somewhat unforgiving view into the fast-paced life of an intelligent young female idol thrust into foreign lands and a life full of ever-changing faces and places.
S-VHS was the high-resolution enhancement to the VHS video tape system which was so popular in the 80's and 90's. The main benefit of the S-VHS system was improved horizontal resolution (400 lines vs. VHS's 250 or so lines), but it didn't improve VHS's abysmal color resolution and only slightly improved the noise floor of the picture. Since it's improvements were not quite revolutionary and the tapes were not backwards compatible with standard VHS, it generally failed to take hold in the marketplace and there were very few prerecorded S-VHS tapes released.
