Program Notes:
Stacy Garrop, born in 1969, is a full-time freelance composer living in the Chicago area. Her catalog covers a wide range, with works for orchestra, opera, oratorio, wind ensemble, choir, art song, various sized chamber ensembles, and works for solo instruments. Her music is centered on dramatic and lyrical storytelling. Garrop shares stories by taking audiences on sonic journeys – some simple and beautiful, while others are complicated and dark – depending on the needs and dramatic shape of the story. Commissioned by the Gaudete Brass Quintet in 2016, Garrop’s, Legends of Olympus, is a five-movement brass quintet work depicting five of the deities from ancient Greek mythology; Helios, Aphrodite, Hermes, Apollo, and Dionysus.
“Hermes is a merry and mischievous young god with a sharp wit. Zeus, his father, appointed Hermes as the messenger between the inhabitants of Olympus and the people on earth. Hermes goes about his errands wearing golden shoes and cap, both adorned by a pair of wings.”
