長島の西岸は東シナ海、北岸および東岸は八代海に囲まれている。
鹿児島県長島町と阿久根市を結ぶ全長502mの海峡大橋の下は八代海と東シナ海天草灘の境目にあり、橋の下は急激な流れとなっており、瀬戸内海しまなみ海道の来島海峡（愛媛県）、西海橋が架かる針尾瀬戸（長崎県）と並び、日本三大急潮となっています。
大潮の時にはうずしおを見る事ができます。
The west coast of Nagashima is surrounded by the East China Sea, and the north and east coasts are surrounded by the Yashiro Sea.
Under the 502m-long Kaikyo Bridge that connects Nagashima Town and Akune City in Kagoshima Prefecture, there is a boundary between the Yashiro Sea and the East China Sea Amakusa Nada, and there is a rapid flow under the bridge. Along with Hario Seto (Nagasaki Prefecture) over which the Saikai Bridge is built, it is one of the three major rapid tides in Japan.
You can see the whirlpool at the time of spring tide.
