In 2024, longtime collaborators Trevor Smith and Michael Chavez came together once again—ten years after their first green roof project—to transform Boston’s cityscape in a bold and beautiful way. The mission: install 30 green roofs on bus shelters along the #28 bus route, one of the most heavily used lines in the city.
This project blends architecture and green infrastructure to tackle multiple urban challenges at once. It’s not just about beautifying bus stops—it’s about creating a pollinator pathway through the heart of Boston, cooling overheated streets, and offering green jobs to the local workforce.
💡 Why it matters:
– 🌱 Creates habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies
– 🌳 Offers shade and comfort for transit riders
– 🌎 Reduces urban heat and absorbs stormwater
– 🛠️ Supports training and employment in the green industry
– 🌆 Reimagines public space as living, breathing infrastructure
This is more than a project—it’s a vision for cities of the future, where even a bus stop can be a stepping stone toward climate resilience.
➡️ Hit play to see how a small roof can spark big change.
