Blue-white screening is a widely used technique in which a DNA fragment researchers want to study is inserted into a cloning vector and then that vector is replicated using bacterial cells.
The screening process uses the presence of antibiotic resistance to ensure that the bacteria have taken up the cloning vector and detection of beta-galactosidase activity to determine cells have a vector that contains the target sequence.
