Why You Are Perishing With God Standing Beside You

The greatest tragedy is not that God is absent, but that you ignore Him when He is right beside you.

In today’s Gospel, we hear of Saint Peter stepping out of the boat: “And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’ And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’” (Matthew 14:29–31).

Peter was already walking in the miracle. The impossible had begun. Christ was not absent; He was inches away. Yet Peter began to drown because he turned his eyes from the Lord to the storm. Fear replaced faith. This is the judgment of the soul: God is present, His power is real, and yet we perish because of our refusal to trust Him.

The same truth exposes us today. We imagine our failures come from the world, from distractions, from other people, from storms beyond our control. But Christ shows us the deeper crisis: the breakdown is always on our side, never God’s. He has already said, “Come.” He has already given His hand. He has already promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). If we remain unholy, if we live and die unchanged, it is not because God withheld grace. It is because we doubted, feared, and turned away.

This is why distraction is not harmless — it is catastrophic. Every excuse, every delay, every moment spent with your eyes off Christ is already the beginning of death. As the Lord said of the Pharisees, “You are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness” (Matthew 23:27). Outward religion is not enough. Without faith fixed on Christ, the heart becomes a tomb while God stands near.

Yet even here, mercy is near. Peter cried, “Lord, save me!” and Christ immediately stretched out His hand. This is the Gospel: you are perishing, but not abandoned. The Lord is beside you even now. His hand is already extended. Your soul’s salvation depends only on whether you will grasp Him, or continue to sink with Him right there in front of you.
