In 1994, Nirvana began recording sessions at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle. Despite growing tensions between the members and Kurt Cobain’s emotional fragility, they managed to record "You Know You're Right." During the sessions, they decided to go out for dinner. On the way back to the studio, they improvised a relaxed jam session, later dubbed "Jam After Dinner."
A few weeks later, during a European tour, Kurt suffered an overdose in Rome in March, which nearly resulted in his death. This event changed everything. The tour was canceled, and Kurt returned to the United States, where he began isolating himself more and more.
On April 5, Tom Grant, a private investigator hired by Courtney Love to find Kurt, went to his home in Seattle. After knocking on the door with no response, Grant saw a figure in the greenhouse and decided to investigate. There, he found Kurt writing what appeared to be a note, which he quickly hid upon noticing Grant’s presence. Grant spoke with Kurt at length, trying to convince him to seek help. He emphasized the importance of his family and suggested that Kurt should not remain alone in this state. Though hesitant, something in Grant’s words made Kurt reflect, and he agreed to accompany him to a motel that night. This conversation was crucial in preventing a potentially tragic outcome.
On April 21, Tom took Kurt to a rehab clinic in California. The first few days were difficult, but Kurt slowly opened up to the process. He spent his time writing lyrics and sketching new musical ideas. When he left the clinic in July, he was visibly healthier, with an energy he hadn’t shown in years. Determined to resume his musical career, Kurt contacted Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl to get back into the studio.
In September, Nirvana returned to Robert Lang Studios, this time with Pat Smear, who brought a fresh dynamic to the group. They re-recorded "You Know You’re Right," giving the track a more polished and collaborative feel. During the sessions, Dave recalled the "Jam After Dinner" from February and suggested they record it properly. Kurt improvised lyrics into the microphone while the others helped shape the song, which eventually became a complete track.
After a long day of recording, Kurt invited the others to dinner. At the restaurant, the conversation flowed lightly. Krist, Dave, and Pat showed their support and excitement for the band’s creative momentum.
In the following weeks, Nirvana continued working on new songs in Cobain’s basement, propelling the band into a new phase.
