Talk by Dr. Erkan Aydin a Postdoc in the KPV lab at KAUST (Saudi Arabia) for the NGSE PhD-Postdoc series on February 9th 2022
Abstract:
Monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are of great interest to the photovoltaics research community as they promise to combine a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) at an affordable cost. In the last decade, significant advances have been reported towards improving tandem performance, using a range of vacuum- and solution-based processing technologies to fabricate the perovskite top cell. Currently, solution-processed perovskites are the mainstream fabrication approach in the community, and there are long years garnered knowledge, which can tandem solar cells benefit. Indeed, the first examples of the perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have been reported with solution processing. However, adapting solution-processed perovskites on textured surfaces, which is needed to minimize the reflection losses, had been a persistent challenge for a long period. In this talk, I will discuss these challenges, essential consequences on the device design, developed mitigation strategies, and insight into future development for PCEs exceeding 30%.
