Te guruma, Kibisu gaeshi, and Kuchiki taoshi are forbidden in International Judo Federation (IJF) competitions due to the rule changes introduced in 2010 that banned direct leg-grabbing techniques.
As of January 2025, the International Judo Federation (IJF) has not reintroduced leg-grabbing techniques into its official competition rules. The IJF's recent rule updates continue to prohibit leg grabs, maintaining the ban implemented in 2010. Specifically, the rules state that "hooking the legs with the hand or arm, leg grabbing, gripping the trousers and touching the leg from the top of the inner thigh down is forbidden and will be penalised with shido."
However, there have been developments within the All Japan Judo Federation (AJJF) and the Kodokan Institute. In October 2024, the AJJF, in collaboration with the Kodokan, announced the reinstatement of certain leg-grabbing techniques, known as "Ashitori," in the All Japan Judo Championships. This decision aims to blend traditional judo techniques with modern competition practices.
While these changes are significant within Japanese domestic competitions, the IJF has not adopted similar modifications for international events. Therefore, leg-grabbing techniques remain prohibited in IJF-sanctioned tournaments as of January 2025.
