We make it to Cherrygrove City, where we see an old man running like he could do a few marathons and get the Old Rod very early. Even though the Old Rod doesn't seem like a very good gift, you could at least see that Magikarp can fight back, even if it is only Bubble or Reversal. (If only those Corphishes and Krabbys cooperated.)
