Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. This phrase perfectly describes the filming process of the 1996 film adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel. The Island of Dr. Moreau is one of the most notorious troubled productions in Hollywood history.
The film was never intended to be a blockbuster; its production budget was slightly over $30 million. In today’s money, that would be around $60 million. It was meant to be an unconventional, auteur-driven film, similar to 12 Monkeys, released in 1995, which also had a $30 million budget. Bruce Willis enjoyed working on such films so much that he agreed to do The Island of Dr. Moreau as well.
