Thai Buddhist Cremation Ceremony on February 13, 2021

We were taking some photographs at Wat Pho Thong when Fon casually mentioned that a coffin was being taken to the crematorium. I grabbed my GoPro and followed. I had wanted to share a video of a Thai Buddhist cremation ceremony for a long time. The family shared this video publicly on FaceBook, so now I can share it with those interested in Thai Buddhist culture and rituals.

The coffin is loaded on a beautiful chariot and is pushed around the crematorium three times. Next, the coffin is taken up the steps where it is opened, and a cleansing ritual using fresh coconut milk is performed. The casket is then closed and put in the cremation chamber. Flowers made of wood are added to the fire, first by monks, then by family and friends. This is symbolic as the modern cremation ovens are fired by natural gas. Finally, last respects are paid, the door is closed, and the fire turned on high.
