The Centenario Zoological Park, located in Mérida, Yucatán, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Opened on September 18, 1910, this zoo combines a wide variety of animals with recreational and cultural spaces. Below I give you a detailed description of the tour of the zoo:
Main entrance
Upon entering the park, you will be greeted by an impressive wrought iron gate. Near the entrance is a map of the zoo to help you plan your visit.
Main Street
The main avenue is a wide path that takes you through the different venues. Along this avenue, you will find benches to rest and beautiful gardens with tropical plants.
reptilian
One of the first points of interest is the reptile room, where you can observe snakes, lizards, turtles and other reptiles in enclosures designed to imitate their natural habitats.
Aviary
The aviary is a large structure that houses a variety of tropical and exotic birds. Here you can see toucans, parrots, flamingos, and many other species. The design allows birds to fly freely within the enclosed area.
Mammals
Continuing with the tour, you will find the sections dedicated to mammals. Here you can see everything from big cats like lions and tigers to smaller mammals like monkeys and coatis. The enclosures are designed to provide the animals with sufficient space and enrichment.
Primate Area
This section of the zoo is dedicated to various species of primates. The enclosures are equipped with climbing and play structures, allowing visitors to observe the animals' natural behavior.
African Safari
Children's Play Area
The zoo also has a children's play area, equipped with swings, slides and other recreational games. It is a perfect place for children to have fun and burn off energy.
Trains and Rides
The Centenario Zoological Park offers train rides that run throughout the park, providing a panoramic view of the enclosures and gardens. There are also pedal boats available on the central lake.
Gardens and Green Areas
The park has extensive green areas and well-kept gardens, ideal for picnics or simply relaxing. There are many shaded areas offering respite from the tropical sun.
Cafes and Shops
Along the route, you will find several cafes and souvenir shops where you can buy food, drinks and souvenirs from your visit.
Exit
At the end of your tour, you will find yourself back on the main avenue that will take you to the exit. Here you can check the map one last time to make sure you haven't missed any important attractions.
One of the most popular attractions is the African safari. Although not a safari in the traditional sense, this area is dedicated to animals of the African savannah such as zebras, giraffes and antelopes.
Aquarium
The zoo's aquarium houses a variety of freshwater and saltwater fish. Here you can learn about aquatic ecosystems and the importance of conserving them.
