Easy Steps to Grow Hyacinths in Pots at Home

Hyacinth bulbs need a cold period to bloom. In colder areas, plant them directly in the garden in fall. In warmer areas, chill them in the refrigerator for 12-14 weeks before planting. Avoid storing them near ripening fruit, as the gas they release can damage the flowers.

Plant hyacinths in full sun in loose, well-draining soil. Plant them 4-6 inches deep and 5-6 inches apart. Water is usually not needed in fall and winter.

In spring, leaves appear, followed by flowers. Most bulbs produce one flower stalk, but sometimes more.

Hyacinths may not return every year. You can treat them as annuals and plant new bulbs each fall, or leave them in the ground if they reliably return in your area.

To encourage reblooming, allow the foliage to die back naturally. After flowering, cut off the bloom stalk. Once the leaves yellow and die back, cut them off and leave the bulb in the ground.
