Toyota Lexus 2UZ-FE Starter Replacement (With the Secondary Air Injection System 2005-2011) (Part 1)

In this video series, we show you how to replace the starter on the Toyota/Lexus 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE Engine. The vehicle we were working on is a 2008 Lexus GX470. In 2005, VVT (Variable Valve Timing) was added to the engine, and along with it, the secondary air injection system. The secondary air injection complicates the removal of the starter, mainly due to the #2 switching valves that bolt to the water bypass joint at the back of the engine. For 2UZ engines 2004 and earlier, you won't have the secondary air injection system and you'll have an easier time replacing the starter.

The size of the engine compartment you are working in can make a difference. I've seen a video of a guy doing this job on a Tundra, and he could actually get his hand with tools behind the engine to loosen the starter bolts without having to deal with the water bypass joint with the #2 air switching valves attached to it. You would be working totally blind to get onto the starter bolts with an extension and socket, but it looks like it can be done. We didn't have this option, because there was literally a 1/2" of space between the #2 switching valves and the firewall on the GX470.
