Alabama Slim was born Milton Frazier in Vance, Alabama, in 1939. His father built trains at the Pullman plant and his mother did housework to survive. In their home they had an old spinning record player and a box full of 78s. Slim fell in love with the blues of Bill Broonzy and Lightnin 'Hopkins, and that's when the journey began for the ever-elegant bluesman, who was about to burst at the end of his life in 2020 with a scheduled appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. It is incredible that the genius of Alabama Slim, until recently, flew under the blues radar of the world. Slim turned 82 in March and his juke joints in the 50s and 60s inevitably improved his skills, Freddie King's cousin, his escapades from Hurricane Katrina were played on the 2007 album, The Mighty Flood with King's guitar and Slim's wonderful blues vocals painting images from that unforgettable time. Cornelius Chapel Records teamed up with the Music Maker Relief Foundation for this album "The Parlor", to immortalize where it was initially captured. The album was recorded in a shot for a direct feel on the tape, but was captured digitally. Cornelius Chapel brought Matt Patton from Drive-By Truckers and Dexateens from Dial Back Sound into post-production. He and Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mississippi Blues Legend) sequenced the album and added the perfect amount of bass, organ and piano so that the other half of DBS, Bronson Tew, could do their audio magic. The album "The Parlor" takes its name from the New Orleans studio where it was recorded. The album was recorded in just four hours in June 2019. It is hard to imagine anyone recording 10 songs in just four hours. It's even harder to imagine that such a minimal period of time could result in such a solid record. On June 7, 2019, when the world was still as we remember it, Slim, with his cousin Little Freddie King and drummer Ardie Dean entered a New Orleans recording studio called Parlor. The session lasted just four hours with Reginald Nicholas on the board and Dean in the producer's chair. What was tracked was a masterful blues lesson with deep soul. Slim and King's guitars intertwine with Dean's masterful drums to create a boogie, with Slim's soothing vocals spread over them, reminiscent of John Lee Hooker. And yes, he sings as well as he dresses impeccably. On the track "Rock With Me Mamma" a well used blues trope that gets an update from Slim and Freddie and, despite the familiarity of the melodies, it is still a great read. Alabama Slim's clear guitar and warm voice complement each other perfectly, partially completed with Matt Patton's catchy bass lines in "Rock With Me Mamma". At the first audition, "The Parlor" may not seem to have anything new to offer ... but careful and repeated repetitions will reveal a gold mine full of blues traditions with a lovely twist and also reveal a talent that should be in the vinyl for 50 years, not just a few. There are ten tracks that arrive in just thirty minutes ... but this is the only flaw I can find. There is nothing very sophisticated about "The Parlor", but it doesn't need anything sophisticated. This is a great blues album with songs that is just as good for sitting on a balcony with a cold drink at your feet as for dancing in your living room. Altogether, Alabama Slim and his guys deliver a basically traditional blues album with "The Parlor", which impresses with its minimalist 'less is more' orientation. However, or perhaps precisely for this reason, it penetrates the listener's soul and has a beneficial effect on the configuration of the mind. It's a paradoxical album: it's not new, but it's very new at the same time ... that sounds crazy, but, listen and see what I mean. Too good!!!
