GoPro dashcam footage (with audio) of the derecho moving over our mobile mesonet vehicle while parked in the Stone’s Truck Stop parking lot in Watertown, South Dakota.
I made the decision to shelter inside the truck stop as the storm approached. Several QLCS circulations were present along the leading edge, including a confirmed tornado in Castlewood to the south of Watertown.
The mobile mesonet sampled a peak wind gust of 81 mph with a one-minute average wind speed of 60 mph as the leading edge of the derecho overtook the vehicle.
