When my brother Chad called me to do Jesse Itzler's Hell on the Hill, an event described as the world's hilliest half-marathon, I originally said "no." But Chad won me over, calling it a bucket-list item we could tackle together.
Here's what I learned from this experience about resilience when you think you've hit your limit - and why striving for something beyond yourself can help you endure and grow.
The night before the event, Jesse stood up at dinner and told us that, about two hours into the race, everything would go silent for about 20 minutes Why? Because that's when people start thinking about quitting. The goal of the silence is to get people thinking about something beyond themselves.
"When it gets hard, who are you going to be running for?" Jesse said.
The next morning, before the race, some of the participants shared emotional stories of who they were running for, and why. I turned to my brother and asked, 'Who you running for?" He said, "I'm running for you. You're my brother. We're doing this together."
