Did you know you can make alcohol out of Yak milk? In this week's episode of our Mongolia series, we get a true taste of nomadic life (literally!) as we learn the traditional art of distilling homemade vodka. 🇲🇳
In this episode: We start off deep in the countryside, observing the fascinating process of making yak milk vodka from start to finish. It’s a rare look into the local culture, and Cjae even gets the honor of being invited by the man of the Ger to sit down and drink the fresh batch with him—a moment we won’t forget!
After the festivities, it’s time to pack up camp. We say a hard goodbye to our driver's family, who hosted us for the night, and hit the road toward the famous White Lake (Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur). When we arrive, we are absolutely blown away by the sheer size of the lake, but we quickly run into a classic travel challenge: the mosquitoes! 🦟
Realizing camping right on the water is impossible, we find a spot nearby to escape the bugs and are rewarded with a magical view of about 40 wild horses grazing right next to our tent.
Later in the video: We head to the town of Murun (Mörön) for a much-needed recharge. We spend the night getting some rest, sharing a few laughs, and enjoying some scotch before calling it a night.
The next morning, the real adventure prep begins. We hit the supermarket to stock up on supplies for our upcoming 4-day horse trek and, most importantly, buy gifts for the Tsaatan (Reindeer) people we hope to meet soon. finally, we arrive at the stunning Lake Khuvsgul, call it an early night, and discuss our nerves and excitement for the massive trek ahead.
