At almost 400 feet deep and 3 miles in length, Cheddar Gorge in Somerset is England's largest gorge. Formed 225 million years ago, this natural landmark is now a popular tourist destination with a variety of shops and cafes sprinkled along the road which runs through the gorge. However, if you want to escape the masses, take the circular walk up to the Mendip Plateau and enjoy an aerial view of the gorge and beyond.
I followed the route in a clockwise direction for two reasons. Firstly, in my opinion the views of the gorge and surrounding countryside are far superior on the return leg towards Cheddar. Secondly, you can descend Jacob's Ladder for free but if you go anti-clockwise, you will incur a fee to access the steps. I hope you enjoy the view.
